Mentoring Matters @Illinois: Tips for Faculty

To remain a vibrant institution, it is important that our faculty members have the opportunity to reach their highest aspirations in teaching, research, service, and public engagement. Faculty mentoring is a crucial component of this process.

The Mentoring Matters tip sheets are supplemental resources designed with Illinois faculty members, across all ranks, in mind. Short and easy to read, they focus on relevant topics that you, as a faculty member, deal with at some point in your long career at Illinois. The guidance we offer in these tip sheets is based on current literature, best practice, and collective wisdom from leaders and experts from across our campus.

These tips are not meant to replace policies and procedures described in campus, college, and departmental by-laws, manuals, or other communications. In using these resources, we strongly encourage you to consult all relevant documents to ensure that your actions are appropriate and permissible. It is also important to recognize the unique circumstances of every situation; some practices may not be applicable in every context. The goal of these resources is to help you be better informed about a variety of practices and strategies for success.

We hope you will combine these tips with your good judgement, experience, and other resources available to you here at Illinois.
