Session Description:
The hidden curriculum is in every learning environment. The common argument today in higher education is that we should reveal the hidden curriculum, but there are some aspects of the hidden curriculum that shouldn’t just be revealed—they should be dismantled. As we evaluate and reveal our hidden curricula, we should consider which parts of it to make visible and which to make disappear altogether. If the only defense of a practice is that we survived it, the practice should not survive us. Through real-world examples of hidden curricula that need to be made visible and those that need to be erased entirely, this session will equip you to analyze your campus norms and challenge you to pinpoint where you have the power to create change.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify implicit biases and systemic barriers within their institution’s current “hidden curriculum.”
- Analyze existing academic policies and cultural norms to distinguish between those that need transparency and those that require deconstruction.
- Develop a preliminary action plan to dismantle a specific, inherited practice within their own educational environment.
