Charge Letter
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you very much for agreeing to serve or continue to serve on the Campus Committee on Promotion and Tenure for the 2025-26 academic year. My thanks to Curtis Perry for agreeing to serve as chair of the committee this year.
The committee’s charge is to act in an advisory capacity to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in matters of promotion and tenure for members of the faculty. The committee is expected to review the recommendations for promotion and tenure appointments and ensure the policies outlined in Provost Communication 9 have been adhered to in each case.
Attached for your use is a copy of Provost’s Communication # 9 (Promotion and Tenure) and a contact list for this year’s committee.
I will meet with the committee in the late fall or early spring semester for a preliminary session to discuss various matters pertaining to promotion recommendations and to answer any questions the committee may have, particularly the new members. Executive Vice Provost Bernhard will serve as staff support and his assistant, Jean Hanks, will be in touch with you to schedule that meeting. The majority of the committee’s work is done during the spring semester and normally involves six or seven meetings to review recommendations received at the campus level. It may be necessary for a subgroup of the committee to serve on special ad hoc committees to review materials received in response to a faculty member’s appeal of the decision made in their case. These situations could involve one or possibly two meetings as late as June.
The Campus Committee on Promotion and Tenure is crucial to ensuring academic excellence on our campus. I appreciate your willingness to contribute your expertise to this exceptionally important service, and I look forward to working with you.
