As Campus Coordinator for Programs on Teaching and Learning, Dr. Mary-Ann Winkelmes is the Provost’s Office liaison to the college teaching academies. Through her work with the academies, her aim is to complement and promote teaching and learning initiatives at Illinois.
Specifically, Dr. Winkelmes has responsibility for aiding teaching academy directors and staff members in providing innovative professional development opportunities for new and veteran faculty members. Each college teaching academy is uniquely positioned to address the discipline-specific needs of its faculty affiliates; her task is to enhance the effectiveness of each academy’s efforts by energizing the exchange of expertise and resources among the academies. She will also build on the success of the Faculty Seminar series she offered in Spring 2009, which featured noon-hour discussions on topics nominated by faculty: “Leading Worthwhile Class Discussions,” “Collaborative Learning: When Is It Worth the Time It Takes?” and “Grading and Feedback on Students’ Written Work: Less Is More.”
Prior to arriving at Illinois, Dr. Winkelmes (Ph.D., Harvard, 1995) held senior leadership roles in the campus teaching centers at the University of Chicago and Harvard University. Her publications include Voices of Experience: Observations from a Harvard Teaching Seminar, co-edited with James Wilkinson (Peter Lang, 2000), chapters in books on higher education (Practical Wisdom, Peter Lang, 2004) and Italian Renaissance art (Picturing Women, Cambridge University Press, 1997; Coming About, Harvard University Art Museums, 2002), and articles on Benedictine church design and decoration, acoustics and religious architecture, patrons of art and architecture in Renaissance Italy, and college teaching. She brings national visibility to her Illinois effort through her elected service on the Core Committee (Board of Directors) of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education. Dr. Winkelmes also consults for the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment’s grant-making programs.
